canstor canadensis: arboreous (beaver tree)

2008

‘Castor Canadensis: Arboreous (beaver tree) continues my critical engagement with issues embedded in colonial constructs. Having begun with research at the Hudson Bay Company Archives in Winnipeg, Canada it incorporates beaver pelts as avatars of Canadian history and identity, trees as historical documents and living bodies, and my performative actions as metonyms for agency.  The images above document the first intervention in the project, which was carried out at the Banff Centre for the Arts in January 2008.  It took the form of a documented enaction centered around a forty foot tree near a public path through the woods.
